Uttalande från professor Barry Marshall, nobelpristagare i medicin

A letter of support from Nobel Laureate Professor Barry J. Marshall to the Swedish Gastric Cancer Research Fund
Insamlingsstiftelsen Forskare mot Magsackscancer,
Gothenburg, Sweden

Gastric cancer due to chronic infection with Helicobacter pylori is a serious health problem in many parts of the world, and additional research efforts are urgently needed in order to reduce the mortality of the disease.

The project “Immunology biomarkers and vaccine antigens for gastric cancer”, which is going to be carried out in Nicaragua as a collaborative effort between a number of very well‐renowned research groups in Canada, Sweden and the US, is therefore of high importance. The project builds on many years of expertise in the field among the participating research groups, and it is designed in a careful and stringent way. Importantly, several novel and innovative aspects of the search for biomarker profiles and possible vaccine antigens are going to be pursued.

I believe that this project may have a great impact on the development of diagnostics for early gastric cancer, and of therapies that can reduce the risk of gastric cancer development, and I therefore fully support the fundraising activities of The Swedish Gastric Cancer Research Fund for the benefit of this project.

Yours sincerely,
Barry Marshall, AC Nobel Laureate
